Algorithm for Acute Cerebral Infarction
- Head CT to exclude intracranial hemorrhage, tumor or vascular malformation. May bypass head CT and proceed directly to MRI/MRA if feasible.
- MRI/MRA to evaluate extent of infarction and the degree of stenosis of cerebral vasculature.
- Carotid vascular ultrasound to complement MRA evaluation of extracranial carotid arteries.
- Carotid arteriogram in suspected cases of vascular dissection or vasculitis.
