VI. Conclusions

The best possible diagnoses from nuclear medicine studies with minimal patient dose and discomfort require a good understanding of the various physical factors which underlie the image formation (and photon detection) processes, including:

detailed characteristics of the isotope being used
photon and charged-particle interactions in the patient and in the components of the detector
operating principles of the various detectors used for nuclear medicine studies and for ensuring radiation safety
