Format Density

BWH Image Perception Laboratory investigators employ the term format density to identify the number of images per film. Increasing format density implies higher numbers of images per film and smaller individual images; decreasing format density implies the converse. Influence of CT Image Size and Format on Accuracy of Lung Nodule Detection studied the effects of format density on 35 cm by 43 cm films. The following format densities were used in that study.

Image Size (mm) Format density Size of 3 mm Nodule on film (mm)
40 x 40 80 .37
54 x 54 42 .50
65 x 65 30 .60
80 x 80 20 .75
100 x 100 12 .94
133 x 133 6 1.25
